Caring for Pets and Neighbors in a Tight Economy

Can you imagine having to give up your pet because you can't afford to feed it, or can't afford the medicine or veterinary care it needs? We're working hard to make sure local families don't have to face that horrible prospect. Friends of PAWS are pitching in to support two programs that help neighbors and their pets who may be having a tough time with the tight economy.

Program Director Marylou Zimmerman, Board Member Cindy Jones and Executive Director Mark Hufford prepare to unload a car full of donated pet food and supplies to help stock the local food banks.
Pet Food Bank

PAWS' Pet Food Bank program provides cat food and dog food to the four food banks on Bainbridge Island and North Kitsap. The food banks distribute the pet food in the same way they distribute food to help hungry families – mostly through families stopping by to pick it up.

Food donations to the program can be made by dropping off full or partial bags (or cans) of non-expired food to the PAWS Cat Adoption Center, 8820 Miller Road, on Bainbridge Island. In Kingston, pet food donations may be dropped off at the Country Pet Shoppe (attn: Stephanie) or at Sacks Feed and Garden (attn: Cathleen). We are also setting up a network of drop-off locations throughout Bainbridge and North Kitsap. Watch this space for further information on drop-off locations.

Once a month, volunteers take all donated food and re-package it into individual-sized bags. If you'd like to donate quart-sized or gallon-sized ziploc bags for this purpose, we can always use them. If you'd like to volunteer to support the program, either to help bag the food, or to deliver it, please contact Amy Munns at amy@leash4lease.com.

Cat Adoption Center hours: Mondays 12-6; Tues. through Fri 11-6, Sat. 10-6

Buck's family received financial assistance to treat his life threatening parvo virus at Poulsbo Marina Vet Clinic.

Vets at Winslow Animal Clinic perform life saving surgeries with financial support from PAWS for families that would otherwise have no recourse for their injured pets.

Veterinary Financial Assistance Program

As funds are available, PAWS provides direct financial assistance to cover some veterinary costs of pets owned by low-income residents of Bainbridge Island and North Kitsap County. Up to $125 in assistance can be provided for up to two pets per year. Veterinary services are provided by appointment only at a network of seven veterinary clinics that cooperate with PAWS by providing low-cost services.

To apply for assistance, ask for an application form at the following food banks:
