A family pet is lost every two seconds. More than 10 million pets become lost each year. One out of every three pets is lost during its lifetime, and only one in 10 lost pets is found. -- National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy

In an average month PAWS will field close to 70 calls for lost and found pets. Even with the best efforts of PAWS and its volunteers, because of a lack of identification many of these situations do not result in reuniting animals with their families.

50% of dogs and 75% of cats are without collars by the time they arrive at an animal shelter.

Safeguard your dogs and cats before they are lost using these commonsense tips:

  • Pet-proof your yard. Be sure to check your fence regularly for new escape routes.

  • Keep fence gates securely locked.

  • Always transport a cat in a carrier.

  • Always leash or crate a dog when away from home.

  • Get some good photos of your pet now. Take close up photos that show detail and any distinguishing features of your pet.

  • Always keep a collar on your pet with a tag that has your current phone number on it.

  • Microchip your pet -- if a collar becomes lost or removed this is the only way to identify your pet. Shelters do not routinely check for tattoos.

  • Spay and Neuter your pets -- both males and females are less likely to wander if they are fixed.

PAWS provides an information clearinghouse for lost and found pet reports -- found pets are listed in classified ads in the Bainbridge Review and Kitsap Herald, and listed on the Kitsap Humane Society Lost Pet Hotline.

PAWS provides resources on places to post lost/found pet signs, and what information is important to include.

In the last 7 years PAWS has received over 5,000 lost & found pet reports.

Lack of identification is the number one killer of animals in animal shelters. More pets die each year due to lack of identification than from all infectious diseases combined. -- National Humane Society
